Search Engine Optimization
What Is Search Engine Optimization?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a complicated sounding term for a pretty simple concept, although the process itself is one that requires a high degree of skill from the company providing the service.
Let’s start at the beginning.
When a user types a search like “attorney phoenix” for example, into a search engine like Google, Google then provides that user with a list of the best possible matches for this keyword term out of millions of results. This list includes ten to thirteen organic placements that include Google Local placements, in addition to a variety of Paid Per Click placements.
What most people do not realize is that Google does not base its organic placement results on traffic, or the popularity, of the website on the first page. The websites that show first page placements are there because they provide the most relevant content for the search engines. This specific content is called link-building, and each link and bit of content is like a vote for the website that is being optimized. The website with the most votes essentially “wins” the first page placements on the search engines, thereby increasing visibility on the search engines for keywords that will bring them increased traffic, and an influx of new customers.
When an expert SEO company does link building, they will put together a wide variety of hand submitted (not automated software link programs) links that include articles about the industry their client is in, directory submissions, and valuable, high ranking one way back links that serve as quality endorsements for their client’s websites. These bits of content are valuable in the search engine’s eyes because the information is current, and useful when determining what website would be the best match for their user’s queries. It makes more sense when it is put this way—if a business is willing to go the extra mile to provide new, useful content to its potential customers on a consistent basis, they are more than likely going to provide a great product or service for the consumer using a search engine to find an answer to their question. So, Google is more likely to see a website doing SEO as a great match, and with time, and more content being put out by search engine experts, businesses that do SEO for their websites will start to reap the benefits of first page placements.
Why are first page placements so important? Research shows that 80% of search engine users to not go past the first page when looking for a product or service. Of those 80% of searchers, 60% of those users will give their money to the businesses on the first 5 organic positions. Those businesses that are showing well (first 5 positions) are getting the new business, and those that are not, are not getting new business, at least not from the Internet.
Wayne Gretzky said it best when he remarked “you miss 100% of the shots you do not take.” In terms of Internet marketing, you miss 100% of the clients searching for your product or service when you do not invest in SEO, because potential clients do not even know that your business exists as a solution to their query.
Most businesses recognize the value of doing SEO for their website. Yet with so many options available in terms of the sheer number of firms that offer SEO services, how can you make sure that you are choosing the right SEO partner?
- They have a proven track record of success, and can show you not only case studies and testimonials, but they are happy to share client’s information with you so that you can learn for yourself if the service they provide is beneficial to their clients.
- The SEO company has a large and skilled enough team to handle your company’s account. One or two man shows will simply never make enough of an impact on first page placements. Great SEO requires a large team to do quality link building, as well as a skilled team of copy-writers, web developers, and production team members.
- They make no guarantees, but they can show you clients that are showing great on the search engines. At the end of the day, no SEO company can tell Google, Yahoo, or Bing, how to rank their clients. But by doing expert SEO work, an SEO firm can show consistent results, and this is something they can share with you.
